Presentation Title:

Elevating pediatric outcomes: Introducing child life services into the healthcare model

Abstract

Hospitalization can pose significant developmental and psychological challenges for children. Child Life programs, led by Certified Child Life Specialists, are evidence-based interventions that address the emotional, cognitive, and psychosocial needs of pediatric patients. As the UAE accelerates its commitment to pediatric healthcare, integrating Child Life services offers an opportunity to enhance clinical outcomes and support child development. This presentation will explore how Child Life used evidence-based practices—such as medical play, procedural preparation, coping strategies, and family support—mitigate medical trauma and promote resilience. Clinical case examples will demonstrate the developmental benefits of integrating Child Life support within multidisciplinary pediatric care teams. Drawing from successful models in neighboring GCC countries and international standards, we will also outline implementation strategies tailored to the UAE context. Child Life programs are not just an enhancement to pediatric care—they are essential to ensuring developmentally appropriate, emotionally supportive healthcare for children. By incorporating Child Life services,  hospitals can support child development and lead the region in delivering compassionate and family-centered pediatric care.
