Literacy behavior of young children age 3-5 years old enrolled in reach out and read program in a tertiary hospital in Quezon city from January 2016 to December 2020

Abstract

Background: Learning starts at home. Reach Out and Read Program is an initiative to promote early literacy among children 6 months to 5 years of age. It is done by giving young children developmentally- appropriate books, demonstrating an environment filled with literacy tools and volunteer readers, and offering parents anticipatory guidance.
Objective: To determine the effect of Reach Out and Read on the literacy of young children ages 3-5 years old enrolled in Reach Out and Read program in terms of interest in shared book reading, reading habits, reading ability, and school performance.
Design: This is a correlational qualitative descriptive study of the effects of Reach Out and Read on a child’s literacy behavior.
Subjects: Sample size was calculated using Yamane’s formula with a 90% confidence interval. 100 children and their caregivers who have previously enrolled in ROR participated in this study.
Methodology: Questionnaires via Google form are the primary research methodology.
Statistical Analysis: The Mann-Whitney U Test was used for Non-Parametric analysis. All statistical tests were two-tailed with a significance level of p less than 0.05.
Result: Children who previously participated in the ROR program and had owned books scored significantly in terms of their reading ability. It also presented a significant difference in scores of children with internet access in terms of their interest in shared book reading, reading ability, and school performance with a p-value of 0.001, 0.02, and 0.01 respectively.
Conclusion: The Reach Out and Read program showed a positive effect on reading ability among young children.

Biography

Dr. Maicah Sharae Cuaresma completed her medical degree in FEU-NRMF at the age of 24 and underwent residency training in Pediatrics at AFP Medical Center. She is an advocate for early literacy and wellness for children. She is now a board-certified Pediatrician and working in a military institution in the Philippines. She has been recognized for excellence in both academic and military service receiving prestigious awards and she has been honored with multiple military commendations.
